What is the FX-170?
The FX-170 is an upgraded high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) designed specifically for BMW B46/B48 engines. Featuring a larger bore size than the stock pump, it delivers approximately 50% more flow, enabling higher performance. It is fully E85-compatible and plug-and-play, requiring no cutting, splicing, or modifications for installation. Additionally, the FX-170 operates at 25% higher pressure than stock pumps, allowing injectors to flow more fuel for the same injector open time. This increased capacity makes it perfect for supporting larger turbos and higher ethanol blends.
Why do you need it?
The stock HPFP on B46/B48 engines is a major limiting factor when tuning for increased power. The FX-170 addresses this by providing 50% more flow and higher operating pressure, raising the fueling limits on the platform. This upgrade allows you to run larger turbos and higher ethanol concentrations, unlocking your engine’s full performance potential.
What does the kit include?
Optional Add-ons:
SPOOL 10-Micron Filter Unit
Our 10-micron filter unit offers the best filtration on the market with no noticeable pressure drop in the low-pressure fuel system. This filter is highly recommended to protect your HPFP and injectors from debris, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.
Are tune changes required?
Yes, calibration changes are required to use the FX-170. These updates must be applied before starting the engine with the upgraded pump to avoid damage and voiding the warranty.
Spool Performance can provide calibration details for your existing tuner or help you connect with tuners experienced with FX-170 pumps. While Spool Performance doesn’t offer custom tuning, we are available to assist with questions your tuner may have. Proper custom tuning is essential to get the most out of your FX-170 based on your vehicle’s specific setup and conditions.
Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Upgrade
Proper low-pressure fueling is critical for the performance and durability of the HPFP and injectors in direct injection (DI) systems. Inadequate low-pressure fueling can lead to damage to the pump piston and bore, which rely on fuel for lubrication. Any damage caused by low-pressure starvation is detectable and will void the warranty.
Ensure your fuel system includes the necessary low-pressure upgrades to support the FX-170. Careful planning of your fuel system is essential to achieve reliable and efficient performance in high-output applications.
